Why Al Salaam Academy?

Alhamdulillah, thousands of Muslims are fortunate to call Baltimore and Howard Counties home. Over the past couple of years, we have made significant investments in Islamic education for our children, with the establishment of Muslim preschools, Islamic elementary schools, and middle schools. However, as our children reach the completion of middle school, the options decrease significantly. This crucial time in their development lacks Islamic high school options to cater to their needs.

Al Salaam Academy was founded on the belief that Muslim youth should have a place where they can learn about their religion during this important phase of questioning and self-discovery. We have long recognized that public schools are not ideal for the healthy development of our Muslim youngsters, and as a community, we can no longer ignore this issue. The recent intensification of LGBTQ+ ideology being taught in schools has further highlighted the urgent need for Islamic schools.

While some may view public or non-Islamic private schools as viable options, the truth is that relying solely on extracurricular programs, Sunday schools, and youth hangouts is insufficient for preserving Islam in future generations. We must strive to establish an education framework that allows our children to excel in both the secular realm and their connection to true Islamic academia and scholarship.

This can only be achieved through the collaboration of traditional Islamic scholars with Western academics and educators, working together to create an educational system that embraces the best of both worlds. It is an enormous task, but we are hopeful that Al Salaam Academy will rise to the occasion, insha Allah.
